Highlights of the Safari

Boteti River, Makgadikgadi Pans National Park

The Makgadikgadi Pans National Park is home to the second-largest zebra migration in the world. Here, thousands of zebras migrate to the Boteti River in the dry winter months, coming from their summer grazing grounds further inside the park. The fascinating contrast between the Boteti River and the arid national park makes it an absolute must for any Botswana safari.

Maun

Set on the banks of the beautiful Thamalakane River in northern Botswana, Maun is the third-largest town in this spectacularly scenic Southern African country. The town is the starting point for most expeditions into the Okavango Delta, earning its title as Botswana’s tourism capital. Area attractions include a renowned riverboat offering cruises along the Thamalakane River, the forest groves of the Maun Game Reserve, and Moremi Game Reserve—home to hippos, lions, and rhinos.

Moremi Game Reserve

Situated in the east of the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve ranks among the most beautiful reserves in Africa. It covers more than 4,871 square kilometers of pristine wilderness, featuring varied terrain—savannah, winding waterways, and dense forests. This diverse ecosystem supports an incredible range of wildlife, from large herds of buffalo, wildebeest, and zebra to the rare sitatunga and lechwe antelope, as well as lions, cheetahs, and wild dogs.

Kazuma Forest Reserve

Located in the Chobe region of Botswana, the pristine Kazuma Forest Reserve offers an authentic African wilderness experience. This impressive landscape spans thousands of hectares, featuring expansive grasslands, natural pans, and Mopane tree forests. It is home to abundant wildlife, including wildebeest, buffalo, antelope, sable, giraffe, zebra, lion, and leopard. Numerous elephant herds also frequent this reserve, as it lies along a key elephant corridor.

Here Africa has extensive knowledge and experience in most African countries. Over the years, we’ve learned essential “Do’s and Don’ts” for traveling across the continent. Below is a helpful guide to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey. Note that not all tips apply to every destination—your itinerary will determine what’s most relevant.

Ethical Wildlife Practices
Due to a lack of transparent regulation around captive wildlife interactions, Here Africa does not support activities involving physical contact with captive animals. We encourage you to consider the ethical implications of such experiences, should they be offered at your lodge.

Arriving for Safari

  • Rest up! Adjusting to a new time zone takes time. Consider arriving a day early to start your adventure refreshed.

Currency

  • Avoid street exchanges or “too-good-to-be-true” offers (e.g., 50% premium rates)—these are illegal black-market transactions.

  • Hotels, camps, and lodges may exchange currency, but rates can be less favorable. We recommend accredited Bureau de Change offices.

Credit Cards

  • Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted at hotels, lodges, and urban areas.

Health & Safety

  • Medication: Pack enough prescription meds for your trip—local pharmacies may not stock what you need.

  • Hospitals: Larger towns have medical facilities, but remote areas do not.

  • Safety: Avoid walking alone at night or in unfamiliar areas.

Passports & Valuables

  • Keep passports, documents, and valuables secure at all times.

  • Carry photocopies of important documents in a separate location.

  • Leave expensive jewelry at home—safaris call for practicality!

Packing Tips

  • Luggage: Use soft bags (ideal for safari vehicles). Check airline weight limits (typically 20kg) and safari limits (often 15kg).

  • Tags: Label all bags for flights and safaris.

  • Essentials:

    • Comfortable, layered clothing (sun protection + warm layers).

    • Sturdy shoes, hat, light raincoat, and sunscreen.

    • Flashlight (some lodges have limited electricity).

On Safari

  • Punctuality: Arrive on time for game drives—delays mean missed wildlife sightings!

  • Wildlife Caution: Animals are wild—never approach them, even if they roam near lodges.

Climate & Sun Safety

  • The African sun is intense. Protect yourself with sunscreen, hats, and hydration to avoid heat exhaustion.

Food & Water

  • Water: Stick to bottled water (tap water is unsafe in many regions). Ice is usually safe but ask first.

  • Food: Enjoy Africa’s fresh fruits and veggies—peel them before eating. Most meals are provided on safari.

Malaria Precautions

  • Many African regions are malaria zones. Take anti-malaria meds as prescribed and consult a doctor if flu-like symptoms appear post-trip.

Electricity

  • Voltage is typically 220-240V AC. Bring a converter if your devices don’t support this.

Photography

  • Ask permission before photographing people.

  • Never photograph military, police, government buildings, or airports.

Tipping

  • Restaurants: 10% tip (unless service charge is included).

  • Guides/Drivers: $5–$10 USD per day is appreciated.
